Talk by Mr. Gurcharan Das

Thursday, 16 May 2013,
Daniel’s Tavern, The Imperial, New Delhi

Gurcharan Das gave a very thought-provoking and entertaining talk using his recently published book “India Grows at Night: A Liberal Case for a Strong State”: as a backdrop. The event took place at the Imperial, New Delhi on Thursday, 16 May 2013 and was attended by a wide range of EBG members from the corporate world as well as EU member state Embassies.

Mr Das began by using the examples of Faridabad and Gurgaon to show how India is growing at night – in the 1980’s Faridabad was where the future lay while Gurgaon was a wilderness where even the goats ran away. Today, Faridabad lies groaning under red tape and compliance, crippled by corruption. Gurgaon has become one of the driving forces of India, with 27 shopping malls, 7 golf courses, but a deficient infrastructure, thanks to the laissez faire attitude of the local authorities. Neither of these examples constitute viable models for the future of India, but what is clear is that India is growing while the government sleeps… but how can it grow during the day?

Looking at what constitutes the pillars of a strong liberal state – an effective executive, the rule of law, being accountable to the people - Mr Das went on to examine the criteria which determine India’s success today. Contrary to China which has a weak society but a strong state, India enjoys a strong society but a weak state. It has nevertheless succeeded in becoming the 2nd biggest growing economy in the world despite the lack of strong governance.

Projecting into the future, there is no doubt that India’s governance must be improved; a strong leader is needed to reform institutions and to give a future to the 40% of the Indian population born after 1991. One source of optimism is the new middle classes coming from the rural areas: aspirational, confident and full of rage against bad governance.

Every country has a code-word. In the US, it is Liberty, in France Egalité, in India that word is Dharma, meaning law, goodness, justice, doing the right thing. India’s future lies in economic and institutional reform, but also in allowing the language of Dharma to prevail.

Mr. Kandarp Singh, Managing Director, Tetra Pak, South Asia Markets brilliantly presented the case study on the subject spending a couple of hours to share his views on the leadership paradigm of running an operation locally whilst belonging to a global organization. He very interestingly brought out through a simple presentation the main idea of his that going Global to Local is not a geographical transition but the personal transformation for leaders as well as organizations.

Taking examples from his own organization and also his own career path at Tetra Pak, Mr. Singh highlighted what he thought were the different kinds of attitude some leaders have according to their exposure to global roles and also to their own emotional intelligence. The audience was captivated by the explanation and found some resonance when Mr. Singh started describing the typical attitudes one could have being either too arrogant and top down or too fief king.

It was a very interactive session which was moderated by Mr. Henry de Montjoye, Managing Director, Mercuri Urval.
